2012 Best Dam Tri — They Are The Champions

by Ron Adkins

Heart of America Triathlon News

The inaugural Best Dam Triathlon, raced in the shadow of the Coralville Reservoir Dam near North Liberty, Iowa, was a packed event.

The newly-added Olympic-length race served as the Midwest Collegiate Championship, and as a qualifier for the upcoming Collegiate Nationals.

Kim Sprenger was the female winner of the Best Dam Tri sprint, coming in with a 1:15:46. Dennis Dane of Golden Valley, Minnesota, was the top male in the sprint with a 59:40. Kim and Dennis also received special winners’ plaques, new for this year, named the Goldsmith Award.

The award is named for Chad Goldsmith, another outstanding triathlete in the HOA series, who was involved in a severe accident on the bike course during a 2011 race held on the same course. But Chad was back training by November and has been competing at full speed this season. To honor his determination, the Best Dam Tri chose to name the Sprint Championship award in his name.

Meanwhile, on the long course, Allison Kindig of Iowa City raced for collegiate honors in the Olympic. She came in first with a 2:18:35. Top male Olympic laurels went to Alex Libin of Iowa City with a 1:55:00. Full results at jmsracing.

The sprint course was the victory lap for Heart of America series champions. Points leaders in the 2012 season raced for the most coveted prize of all — free entries into 2013 HOA tri’s.

John Grice of Kewanee, Illinois repeated as 2012 Heart of America champion for the men. Kim Sprenger of Iowa City claimed the women’s crown. They will race free in each Heart of America event in 2013. Other series winners who will be racing free in 2013 include Trina Dunham, Pat Kenel, Ann Vestle and Margaret Millar on the women’s side, and for the men, Guy Olson, Jim Hagelie, Sam Lundry and Dan Tucker. 367 triathletes hit the 72-degree water on another perfect day for racing. John Snitko of JMS Racing Services, which puts on the Heart of America series was pleased with not only the results of the race, but the quality of competition – for the entire Heart of America series. He looks forward to another exciting season in 2013.
