CyMan 2012 – New Course Exceeds Expectations

Pre-race conversation at the 2012 running of the CyMan Tri Sprint focused on two main topics: the new site for the race and the Iowa State football game the day before. The big buzz centered on course conditions for the CyMan’s new location at Kinney Park near Bondurant, Iowa. A very close second was the Cyclones’ victory over their arch-rival Iowa Hawkeyes the day before.

But once the starter’s air horn fired, all 210 triathletes were focused and ready to compete under near-perfect late summer conditions. Water temperature of Lake Petocka was a balmy 74 degrees. Clear skies and brilliant sunshine warmed against a 55-degree start time and a stiff  northerly breeze.

Race Director Kelly Kalvelage, an architecture major at Iowa State, was pleased with CyMan’s new locale. “It’s turned out to be a pretty nice space. And you know you have a good tri course when the biggest complaint is about parking.” Kinney Park is the fourth site of the CyMan since its inception. Last year’s race was hampered by a massive algae bloom that made the swimming leg difficult. Kalvelage is hopeful that the facilities at Kinney Park and Lake Petocka will be a perfect fit for CyMan competitors for many years to come.

Family and fans were treated to an unobstructed view as swimmers began the first leg of the race. The relatively flat bike and run courses made for some impressive times.

Jennifer Groos of Norwalk, Iowa, came in first for the women with a 1:15:55. Jim Hagelie of Waukee, Iowa, posted the top time for the men with a 1:09:24. Full results here.

The CyMan Sprint Triathlon is coordinated by members of the Iowa State University Triathlon Club. 2012 marked the tenth anniversary of the race. All funds raised at this year’s CyMan help send the Club to Collegiate Nationals in Alabama later this year.
