Pigman Sprint 2012 – Shattered

The records fell at the 2012 Pigman Sprint, with course records set on both the male and the female side. And, for the first time in the 21-year history of the race, the first person to cross the finish line was not a man.

A picture perfect Iowa day greeted the 780+ Pigman racers, with air temps in the low 50s.  Water temperature was a moderate 66.

The race started at 7:30 sharp, with the Female Elite division the first wave. The Pigman recently instituted a gender-equalized start, with the females hitting the water, then starting the Elite Males 9:30 later. An additional $750 in prize money awaited the first person of either gender to cross the finish line.

The elite race was one for the books, with prize money and bragging rights on the line. Three women finished the bike before male favorite David Thompson hit transition. But Thompson nearly made up all of the ground on the run, passing first one, then another of the women who had a nearly ten minute head start on him.

But in the end, Claire Bootsma of Minneapolis held Thompson off to not only claim the first-over-the-line prize but also set a new female course record of 1:08:33.

Thompson himself broke his own course record, and became the first person in Pigman history to go under 1:01, with a breathtaking time of 1:00:57. Thompson continued his dominance at the Pigman, this was his 11th crown.

But, the stories in the age group competitors were just as compelling as among the elites. Take 13 year-old amputee Jessica Heims of Swisher, competing in her first ever triathlon, through the support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. In her racing debut, Jessica won her division.

At the other end of the age spectrum, 81 year-old Lyle Roberts of Burlington, not only finished his race with a smile, but also won a wetsuit from sponsor Gear West!

Don’t forget that the Pigman Long has added an Olympic Distance race to its August 19th event. The race is still open. Register at pigmantri.com.
