Keep The Turtleman Alive!

The Turtleman is Minnesota’s oldest triathlon, but it will be a little dry this year.

Turtle Lake is experiencing historic low water levels again this year.  In 2010, race director Mark Stange says the conditions were far from ideal.

“We moved the swim course to a deeper portion of the lake, and even shortened the swim distance, but still swimmers had to run/wade across several yards of muck to get to deep water – and again to exit.  Not good to have mud and sand on your feet when trying to put on bike shoes.”

So Mark and his crew made the difficult decision to change the race to a run-bike-run Duathlon this year.

But, there’s good news. The race has been named the Minnesota Duathlon State Championship event, so expect a talented field running and cycling the fast, flat course.

Mark says “The water level is coming back – not quite there yet, but we really hope to be a triathlon again next year.”

2011 will be the 28th year for the Turtleman, which donates all profits to local charities. Over $200,000 in the last nine years alone.

In the meantime, you can help make sure the Turtleman continues by signing up (and staying out of the mud) this year.  Here’s the link.
