Bluff Creek-Chilly, But Cool

Heavy rains and cool temps the week before the race cooled the lake water in Don Williams Park near Ogden, Iowa to the point that prior to the Bluff Creek Triathlon, race officials were afraid they would have to truncate, or even cancel the swim.

Fortunately, the water warmed up enough the day before the race that race directors Steve Karsjen and Alex Syhlmann were able to lift a mandatory wetsuit ruling, instituted when it didn’t look like the water would warm up.  For safety’s sake, however, it was decided that both the sprint and olympic racers would swim the shorter sprint course. This proved to be wise, as just about every racer completed the swim.

Gusty winds made for a pretty challenging bike course, but participants agreed the run, which wound through the park on both roads and trails, was scenic and enjoyable.  Bluff Creek newbies had to beware, though. Coming out of the woods, you have to make a pretty sharp left turn to finish.  More than one racer overshot the turn and had to make a quick double-back to claim their souvenir Bluff Creek water bottle at the finish line.

The sprint division winners were Ryan Long and Jenny Saylor.  The Olympic crowns went to Matthew Hansen and Joy Carroll.
